Combat System in Age of Conan
1.05 did not actually see that much of a population shift at all. The numbers playing the game have been pretty consistent for most of the year. We think we very much still have an interesting, different and more action based combat system. It is still fast paced, and still rewards skill while also now providing a much better RPG progression system that is appealing to more players (aoc gold).
There is no way that we could see any situation where we would consider rolling back to the previous system. It simply had too many logical flaws and could not really be used to reward progression properly. As we said at the time, we knew that there would be a section of the players (conan gold) that would not like even a 1% compromise towards itemization, and we accept that. It is a valid opinion. If we genuinely thought it was the majority opinion we would have left things the way they were.
Obviously we felt the better course was to strike a balance, and retain the pace, reward those who learn their class abilities and display skill with them, and allow for some meaningful progression. We think 1.05 did that pretty well, not perfectly for sure, and the systems folks continue to refine it, but the game is in a much better state now than it was before the changes.
